Many asylum seekers living in detention centres and referred by the Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network and Supporting Asylum Seekers Sydney, for example, have called our telephone advice line, which provides over 600 people with access to free legal advice each year. These are people who otherwise would not have had access to legal advice in court. The Queensland Asylum Seeker Clinic of Salvos Legal Humanitarian is one of only two legal clinics in the state of Queensland to offer free legal advice to asylum seekers. Salvos Legal surprisingly announced Monday that its founder and managing partner continues as the firm celebrated a milestone of about 20,000 free humanitarian cases for clients in need who otherwise would not have had access to a lawyer, without the firm`s self-funded social enterprise model. Luke Geary, a Salvationist from Auburn, founded Courtyard Legal – the forerunner of Salvos Legal – in 2008, inspired by The Salvation Army founder William Booth`s original plan for a “poor man`s law service,” which he described in his 1890 book In Darkest England and the Way Out. He ran Courtyard Legal on a pro bono basis for seven years before founding Salvos Legal, a groundbreaking law firm where the profits of paying commercial clients are funneled into providing legal services to people who cannot afford a lawyer but are not eligible for legal aid. He says he never intended to leave the business, but family reasons led him to make the decision to move to Brisbane.
