This book argues that a broad notion of “personal labour relations” should become the central organisational idea for the future development of labour law. This concept has been developed on the basis of in-depth comparative studies on the legal architecture of industrial relations in national legal systems and EU law in order to analyse the traditional employment contract model and the difficulties of using this traditional model to design modern industrial relations. The chapters then present a new model of the foundations of labour relations based on the concept of “personal connection to work” and examine the potential of the book model in the development of labour law in terms of the normative objective of “personality at work” and its conceptual elements “dignity”, “ability” and “stability”. The book systematically analyses the interaction between national and EU labour law and discusses the possibility of future legal harmonisation in this area. The book concludes by examining the potential of a common framework for European labour law in the context of wider debates on the harmonisation of European private law.
