Legal Size Redfish

In the 1970s and 80s, red barrels were fished commercially and were not protected wild fish, which eventually led to overfishing, resulting in fewer and fewer fish. With the abolition of commercial fishing and the introduction of strict catch limits, redfish have been able to recover. Red drum regulations are set by the states. Exact regulations vary from state to state, but minimum and maximum size limits (slot limits) as well as daily pocket restrictions are in place in every state where redfish is found. “With this new forward-looking management approach, we are trying to do the best we can for this fishery. This agency is committed to working proactively to preserve Florida`s redfish fishery for future generations while balancing stakeholder interests,” said Steven Hudson, Commissioner of the FWC. Restrictions on redfish vary depending on Florida`s location, so it`s important to know where you`re fishing and what regulations apply. For the entire state, redfish must be between 18 and 27 inches long to be harvested. The daily pocket limits are 2 fish per person or 8 per vessel in the North-East zone and 1 fish per person or 8 fish per vessel in the North-West and South zones. Some areas have special restrictions and it is important to check the regulations before entering the water. If the red bulls are in a feeding frenzy, it really doesn`t matter.

If it seems like something edible, redfish will hit it. * In northeastern Florida (see map below) of Georgia, you can catch two fish a day. Everywhere else, there is one redfish a day. With a depth that ranges from 5 to 10 feet, Dixey Bar is a popular meeting place for redfish in the area. On the west side of the bar is the mobile navigation channel, which has much deeper waters. On the east side is the Gulf of Mexico. Dixey Bar is about 3 miles long, but the width varies widely, from about 2 miles wide near Fort Morgan to a few hundred meters wide when it merges into the gulf at the southern end. The management of Red Drum is considered a success in Florida.

In the late 1980s, red drums were overfished, so several emergency closures were imposed to reduce fishing pressure and rebuild the stock. In 1989, the 18- to 27-inch slot limit, the bag limit of one fish per person, and a closing season from March to May were introduced. Red Drum shares have rebounded and are currently exceeding the FWC`s management target of 40% inhibition in most parts of Florida. Inhibition is the proportion of fish that survive to the age of four compared to fish that would have survived if there had been no fishing. In 2022, FWC introduced a more holistic redfish management approach, with a focus on small management regions, where management decisions are based on 6 management parameters: inhibition, relative abundance, habitat, harmful algal blooms, fishing effort and stakeholder feedback. Each year, the RTC will assess redfish fisheries in each region against these parameters, and the results will be summarized in annual reviews (see links below). Nationally, masters and crew members on rental voyages are prohibited from maintaining a redfish catch limit. In the Atlantic, redfish is regulated in state waters, with federal waters completely prohibiting the harvesting of red barrels.

States have daily slot limits and pocket limits to prevent overfishing. The rich bays, rivers, and swamps of the Mississippi River are teeming with redfish for most of the year. With so many places to choose from, our Mississippi redfish guides will keep you posted. Red drums do not have an open season in federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico and redfish fishing is strictly prohibited. Rockfish currently caught have a wide range of sizes, from the legal limit of 16 inches minimum to red bull sizes of more than 26 inches. Alabama fishing regulations set a redfish niche limit of 16 to 26 inches with a daily pocket limit of three fish. While fishing, anglers can keep a fish over 26 inches per day, but a bullfish is not a good table rate. Just take pictures and throw the beautiful bronze fish inside. A bag limit is a law imposed on hunters and anglers to limit the number of animals within a particular species or group of species they are allowed to kill and keep.

Size restrictions and hunting seasons are sometimes accompanied by harvest restrictions that limit the size of these animals and the time of year when hunters are legally allowed to kill them.
