This condition is very unusual in its approval of all species of foxes, including those caught in the wild. However, there is a catch. Two native fox species, red foxes and gray foxes, cannot be imported from the following states and countries: Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin, Wyoming or Canada. There aren`t many places to buy foxes, and there are well-known breeders in Indiana, Texas, and Ohio. To import a fox from outside the state, you`ll also need to get a one-time import permit, which is likely given to pet owners for the cost of $25. Each household is only allowed a maximum of 6 native wild animals (foxes, squirrels, raccoons and a few other species). Non-native fox species require proof that they were legally acquired and a health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian, which is reasonable. This state requires a permit for wild animals caught for gray and red foxes. The cost of the permit is $33 and applies only to captive-bred animals. A former fox owner claimed that exotic foxes are legal and do not require a permit, but several sources (without cited references) claim that exotic species such as fenneks and arctic foxes are not legal. This legal status of non-native foxes is unclear. Import bans on coyotes, foxes, raccoons and skunks, with the exception of AZA, circuses or certain scientific or educational purposes. In Arkansas, all fox species are allowed, no permit required. Arkansas is one of the legal states for pet foxes and allows all kinds of foxes, but the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers some restrictions on imported foxes. Arkansas residents can even catch a wild fox and keep it as a pet.

It`s an easy license to get and it`s said to make fox ownership very popular in Florida. This list is as complete as possible for states that allow all species of foxes. If your state is not on this list, it is likely that a fox species is not legal and to learn more, firm confirmation from a state official is required.
