The Defence Law Division is headquartered in Canberra. Officer representatives are stationed in most major commands, formations and organisations across Australia. Defence lawyers include permanent and reserve lawyers from the Navy, Army and Air Force (with the exception of lawyers seconded to the Inspector General of the ADF and the Office of the Judge Advocate General). Defence lawyers also include all civil lawyers and defence paralegals. The Defence Law Division is responsible for providing legal advice and other legal services to the Australian Defence Force, the Minister of Defence and the Ministry of Defence. As a member of the Chief Operating Officer organization, the division provides legal and other support to all defence services and groups. Defence Legal is headquartered in Canberra. Defence Legal has 127 permanent ADF legal advisers, 40 Australian Public Service (APS) legal advisers and 85 APS paralegals and other support staff. Approximately 103 of these members are outside our headquarters in Canberra, in ADF commands, bases and units across Australia. Other ADF lawyers serve Australia on overseas missions and exchanges. In addition, 384 active legal officers from the Navy, Army and Air Force complement the work of the ADF`s permanent legal officers in Australia and beyond. Provide legal advice, services and support to the direction and management of the defence in all aspects of the law and the administration of legal matters (except those falling within the competence of the legal officers).
The Defence Legal Directorate is a specialised and integrated national legal organisation. Together, these areas are critical to the functioning of the ADF, as opposed to ADF operations.
