DJs can play any music on Twitch that comes from “Soundtrack”, a Twitch player with only Twitch-compatible songs. The music comes from labels that have done some business. Some labels, such as Anjunabeats, have also created “streamless” Spotify playlists. Others also suggest their catalog for a monthly fee. Keep in mind that copyright indicators usually don`t happen during streaming – meaning you`re not cut off when you play a copyrighted title – but more often after that when videos are stored on your profile. It is conceivable that this new feature around VOD allows you to broadcast a set in your account and then unpublish this video so that it is not muted later. This could be the silver bullet we have been waiting for. I`m sure most DJs are pretty familiar with the Mixcloud platform and how it works. If you`re not, it was the first platform to offer legally published hosting for long-form music. This meant you could download a dj mix or podcast and its own algorithms distributed the recipes to the artists. It is therefore quite logical that this is the first platform to offer this service of live streaming of a DJ set. Dj livestreaming is officially one thing.
Any record company worthy of the name seems to send its most likely DJs to the top of windswept mountains, with drones, multi-camera angles (and generators and a production team hidden in nearby bushes). Whether it`s legal or not (i.e. paying for the right licenses like Mixcloud), we just don`t know – and it doesn`t seem to be very popular, even though it`s been around since April 2020. Still, it might be worth a look! Even if you have already received permission from the copyright owner to play a particular song, there is no guarantee that will save you from trouble. Because, unfortunately, there`s no way for Facebook to know during your feed if you have the copyright to play a particular song. So most of the time no, unless you are a name of the massive industry; Facebook assumes you`re breaking copyright laws and taking your airflow out! First, you need to be able to see your copyright status on Twitch so you always know where you stand. Second, you need tools to make it easier to choose what to share on your channel and when. And third, you need more resources to help you understand your rights and the rights of others under copyright when you broadcast. These three areas were and will remain our blueprint for 2021, and today we`re announcing the first updates that will roll out to all creators. Buying the music, whether in a physical or digital format, also does not give you the right to stream the music. The same goes for music from streaming platforms like Spotify.
In fact, these only grant the use of music for private and personal use. The only way to legally stream DJ sets on Twitch is to use music that the artist or label has approved for that particular use. I offer you a way to find them just below. It certainly made the right noises at launch and gave DJs their own pages, the ability to monetize with tips, pay-per-view and subscriptions, etc. But if you`ve ever tried Mixcloud and felt like there weren`t many potential viewers, it`s worse – we struggled to find streams with over a handful of viewers when we explored it. This blog post will give you all the keys to understanding where copyright and DJing are, such as: how to avoid DMCA strikes, how to stream legally, or what songs you can or can`t play on Twitch. As a result, your feeds are constantly at risk of being removed from the platform. You need to restart and try to convince your audience to come back and find your stream restarted. In addition, reports have recently surfaced online that some DJs are even banned from live streaming on Facebook altogether.
It remains to be seen how long these bans will be in place and how many DJs will be affected. But it`s definitely something worth considering before pressing that upload button! A famous event is what happened to Metallica at Blizzcon 2021. Their song “For Who The Bell Tolls” was replaced with elevator music, which resulted in an embarrassing but funny event. This change, oddly enough, was only made on the Twitch game channel and not on the main channel (it aired on both). If you`ve ever done any type of streaming, this should be a no-brainer. But using software like OBS is the best way to make sure your feeds look more professional than ever.

If you have any doubts about having the proper rights to stream a song, chances are you won`t. If you`re worried that VOD will get you in trouble, you can split your audio tracks into OBS, which will automatically mute the VOD while it can continue playing and listening live. However, I can imagine that you are unlikely to be mute or have problems with 99.9% of riddim tracks unless they contain a long sample of something released by a major label, the same goes for neurofunk and really all genres. In my experience, Twitch only “scans” VODs once the stream is finished (which is why VOD may not remain muted for a few minutes after it is displayed), but my recommendation for maximum copyright certainty would be to split audio tracks into OBS (you can find a guide on Google for this) and record OBS natively DURING streaming. Depending on your equipment, this can be difficult, but it will be of great help in avoiding problems with Twitch while having the entire stream stored on YouTube or MixCloud or whatever for your own use. Many musicians have therefore explored new ways to connect with their audience, with live-streamed events becoming the new status quo of remote belonging.
