According to the Allocation of Business (Rules), 1961, the Ministry of Justice is part of the Ministry of Law and Justice of the Government of India. It is one of the oldest ministries of the Indian government. Until 31.12.2009, the Ministry of Justice was part of the Ministry of the Interior and the Minister of the Interior of the Union was the Secretary of the Ministry of Justice. In view of the increasing workload and the formulation of many judicial reform policies and programmes in the country, a separate ministry, namely the Ministry of Justice, was separated from the MHA and placed under the Authority of the Secretary of the Government of India and, as such, began working under the Ministry of Law and Justice from 1 January 2010. The department is located at Jaisalmer House, 26, Man Singh Road, New Delhi. The organizational structure of the department includes 01 additional secretaries, 03 joint secretaries, 07 directors/assistant secretaries and 08 undersecretaries. The tasks of the Ministry of Justice include the appointment, resignation and dismissal of the Supreme Judge of India, the Judge of the Supreme Court of India, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Judge of the Supreme Courts and their service affairs. In addition, the Department is implementing important programmes for the development of the judicial infrastructure, the establishment of Fast Track Special Court for Rape Cases and POCSO Act, the electronic justice project to computerize various courts throughout the country, legal aid for the poor and access to justice, financial support from the National Academy of the Judiciary for the training of judicial officers of the country. The functions of the Department of Justice are listed in Division of Cases (Rules), 1961. (i) The Directorate is the focal point that oversees the legal and judicial work of CBIC and its field training; The Legal Affairs Directorate is the hub that oversees the legal and judicial work of the CBIC and its field training. As a result, DLA is required to work in close coordination with the legal and judicial services of the CBIC.
